Success is rarely the outcome of blind luck or fate. It is almost always the result of hard work, perseverance and determination. It doesn’t happen overnight either, the most successful people will have solid routines in place and follow a strict regime that will bring opportunities their way and guarantee a positive result from them. To increase productivity and work effectively you must start constructing the right habits, even if some of them might surprise you at first.
#1 They Have Their Morning Routine Down
Whilst you are pressing the snooze button on your alarm for the seventeenth time, the go getters of this world have already started their day and managed to squeeze in some sort of mental or physical fitness regime, in amongst eating a healthy breakfast and going over their plan or schedule for the day. We’ve all heard the phrase ‘the early bird catches the worm’, well it’s true! If you want to get a head start in life and have a productive day, you need to get a head start on the day and rise even before the sun does. Not only will you get so much more done, you will become disciplined and focused like never before.
#2 They Use Their Down-Time Effectively
If you’re used to falling asleep on the commute to work or listening to copious amounts of music on Spotify, you may not be making the most of your ‘dead’ time throughout the day. Many would view a situation such as a long commute as an inconvenience and a waste of their time, but it doesn’t have to be. A successful person in the making would be using precious moments like these where they have no other obligations to get ahead of their own work, catch up on emails or reading material, make phone calls, write down ideas or get tasks accomplished that can be done from a tablet or smart phone. These days, we have the world at our fingertips so there is nowhere you can’t do work or spend time bettering yourself. Why not learn 5 words of a different language every day and see what you remember at the end of the week, you might surprise yourself!
#3 They Think Strategically
“A goal without a plan is just a wish.”
This quote is very poignant, as to be more productive and become more efficient there must be an overall goal or mission in place and a way to achieve it. How will you get to where you want to be if you don’t map it out for yourself (Spoiler alert; you won’t). Yes, it’s possible to stumble across greatness by accident, but this is very rarely the case and for most people success is the result of coming up with a goal, building a strategy, and putting the plan into action. Every important decision in your life should be justifiable with a good reason for making it and you should have an idea of where you see things going when you make any kind of move.
#4 They Count The Minutes, Not The Hours
We know that if we count the pennies, the pounds will look after themselves. But what about with time, have you ever thought how much more productive you could be if you saw the value in every minute, rather than focusing on hours or days? Sometimes we are so hell-bent on a future event or things that will happen somewhere down the line that we become unfocused in the days leading up to them. You might be living for the weekend, or waiting for a big exam to come and go, but you just can’t get that deadline out of your head and it is taking you out of the moment. If this is the case, try to plan your days more efficiently so that you know what you’ll be doing at each and every moment. Obviously you need a little freedom, but if you are determined to succeed and make something of yourself, that is the level of discipline that’s required.
We hope you’re feeling ready and inspired to be more productive after reading this, it doesn’t take much to get started but consistency is key so work on building new habits and they will soon become a fundamental part of who you are.
