Green tea is native to China and India, where it has been used as a medicinal beverage for centuries. Only recently has it gained popularity in the West: find out what the fuss is all about!

Tea is the world’s most consumed drink after water. Of all tea drunk, however, only about 20% is green. The most popular is by far black tea, at a staggering 78%. The color and type of this beverage are determined by the level of oxidation of the leaves: green is one of the least processed, thus containing the most antioxidants and beneficial polyphenols.

According to the National Cancer Institute, polyphenols have shown to decrease tumor growth and protect animals from dangerous damage caused from ultraviolet radiation. Further research is needed to prove the effectiveness against the prevention of cancer.

People have been know for using green tea to lose weight: the compounds contained in it can boost the metabolic rate, leading to decreased body fat. It’s not a significant change, but you would consider throwing it in your diet if you had the chance to do so.

The bioactive compounds can have protective effects on neurons, protecting from the effects of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Certain compounds in green tea are well know to improve brain function. The key active ingredient here is caffeine, a well know stimulant. Although green tea has nowhere near the necessary amount to make you feel jittery from overconsumption, it does contain enough to make you more vigilant.

Finally; it’s great! A well brewed cup of green tea with a side of fresh fruit will turn a gloomy day into a better one. Just be careful to check the optimal brewing temperature of the variety you purchased, as some of them don’t taste well when subject to excessive heat.
