Have you ever noticed how sometimes the smallest of actions seems to drastically change your mood from pitch black to radiant gold? Here is a list of things you can do in order to slowly beat depression and negativity.
Everyone has bad days, but even during the darkest of times no cloud is thick enough not to allow the light to pass through. There are simple and beautiful ways to escape the negativity that could get the best of us during tough periods. Over the past years, I have devised these simple strategies in order to feel that shine even knowing that it is just a little bit hidden. So here are 8 simple ways to beat depression:
Surround Yourself with Positive People
If what is influencing you negatively are your surroundings, try changing them. If you hang out with negative people that only use you as a way to talk about their problems, you might reconsider changing that: their bad mood rubs off on you, making you nervous.
Find an Outlet for your Creativity
Do you not have a creative outlet for your emotions? Then find one! Artistic interests such as gardening, writing or drawing have been proven to help a lot with beating depression. When your whole mind is involved in something creative and artsy, your brain will access other parts other than cognition and thought, and you will give it some time to breathe.
Watch Funny Movies
If you are feeling down as of late, do not feed the beast of depression by watching sad movies or dramas. Choose just the funny ones; by laughing thanks to them, your brain will release endorphins (the hormone of happiness) which will promote a feeling of wellbeing and satisfaction.
Alcohol is a depressant, and consuming it makes you feel down in the long run. If you are struggling with overcoming depression, cut off all alcohol from your diet, and see if it makes a difference in the long run.
Connect with Friends
Connect with positive people that make you feel like you count for them. Smile around them, and do not isolate yourself from the rest of the world.
But not too much. To be healthy, you should sleep from 7 to 9 hours per night. When you are tiered, you are more emotional and more likely to be irrational. If you sleep too much, you will be sluggish and unresponsive. Balance and moderation is the answer to everything!
Help the Less Fortunate
Helping the ones that need it the most lets you put your life into perspective. Volunteer somewhere and stop thinking about yourself by helping the ones that are less fortunate.
Time to Play
Children know very well that playing is a very important business. As adults, we should imitate them and take life a little less seriously sometimes. Be spontaneous, be stupid, and have fun!
I hope you enjoyed these 8 simple ways of overcoming depression. Overcoming a bad mood can be difficult, and sometimes we struggle with ourselves forgetting that we should search the light in what is surrounding us. Let me know if you have your own ways of dealing with depression, and how you make them work.
