A treat equally loved by kids and adults all across the globe. But is chocolate really good for you, or  should you limit yourself when indulging in this delicacy?

When following a healthy diet, we are always told to lay down the sweet treats, and most of all, avoid chocolate. However, there are many different types of this delicacy, and not all of them are bad for you. We could say that there’s good chocolate and bad chocolate, depending on what it is made of.

The Dark Side of Chocolate

If you did not already know, I am happy to be the bearer of good news when I say that chocolate is a healthy food, in fact one of the healthiest you could possibly eat! Truly, this is the dark side of chocolate; a secret that not everybody is aware of. Dark chocolate benefits include and are not limited to: blood pressure regulation, better skin, healthy heart, a better metabolism and insulin control for diabetics. Lets explore some of them more closely:

Antioxidant Properties

Unprocessed cocoa beans are a raw food with one of the highest recorded scores of antioxidant content, way more than blueberries. Antioxidants are well known for slowing down the aging process and limiting DNA damage.

Improved Blood Flow

Flovanols in chocolate can stimulate the lining of arteries, relaxing them and improving your blood flow and pressure. The results are usually mild, but several studies have proven the consistency of this claim.

Reduces the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease

Long term observational studies have proven that it lowers the risk of cardiovascular diseases. By eating chocolate in moderate quantities at least twice a week, you lower the cholesterol levels by over 30%. By eating it more than five times per week, the risk of a cardiovascular disease was halved!

So, in conclusion, is chocolate good for you? The answer is yes, but also no. It first of all depends on what type of chocolate you are consuming. The best chocolate you could be eating is, of course, the dark kind. The higher the percentage of cocoa, the lower the sugar contents will probably be. Skip on all the cream filled, crispy, wafer and milky bars. Only go for the hard, solid, whole type. When you are buying a gift for a loved one, remember to choose it over the other kinds: minimize the sugar, maximize the dark chocolate benefits!
