Health Supplements that Help with Depression

Health Supplements that Help with Depression

A surprisingly large part of the population takes health supplements in order to fight depression-like symptoms. Are you a member of this group?

Each day, thousands of hundreds of people use complementary medical products in order to improve their mood and performance. Some of these health supplements are natural homeopathic products, while others are refined minerals and vitamins. But do these really work? Here is a list of substances who’s efficacy has been scientifically proven. These health supplements have been shown to help either in improving your mood or in treating clinical depression.

St John’s wort

St John’s wort is a natural health supplement that has antidepressant and antiviral properties. The plant has been studied in over 40 clinical trials, which have proven its utility. It has been used for centuries to treat wounds as it stops hemorrhages.

Be carful, however, if you ever decide to take it to help with depression symptoms. When taken with other substances, it can cause serotonin syndrome, which can be fatal.

Zinc is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods. When taken in small quantities, it has been shown to improve mood. It can be taken safely in powder or pill form, up to 30 mg a day. Take care not to ingest it on an empty stomach, as it can cause nausea.

Omega 3 fatty acids

Studies have proven that a low intake of omega-3 oils can be related to a higher risk of depression symptoms. This compound can be naturally found in fish, and is extremely good for you. It helps with regulating your metabolism and your physiology.

S-adenosyl-methionine (or SAMe) is a compound that helps with the process of breaking down chemicals in the brain such as melatonin, dopamine and serotonin. It has been shown that it can help with depression when taken in the right quantity. It is a little expensive but it has less adverse effects than most antidepressants.

We hope you find this list of chemical and natural health supplements useful. Try them out if you are feeling a bit down lately, but remember to be careful with the dosage!
