Life is never afraid to throw a curveball at you from time to time. Just when you think everything is running smoothly and just as it should be, BAM!, your car breaks down, you lose your job, the roof caves in (hopefully not all in one day..). The point is, life has its moments where it causes us to panic and stress about how we can handle a situation and what we can do to manage a crisis, whatever it may be.
Dealing with stress on top of a problem that needs resolving makes everything so much more difficult and solves nothing. The only way to get through it is by facing the problem head on and taking the appropriate course of action to deal with it. Here are five things to keep in mind to help you do just that!
Don’t get caught up in negative thinking. Instead, take a deep breath and re-evaluate your circumstances, taking stock of what has happened and what needs to be done as a result. Always remember that no matter how bad you think you have it, someone else has it worse. If you’re not about to take your last breath then just be thankful that you’re alive and in good health (or if not, just be thankful for the day you have).
This Too Shall Pass
Think of the last time you were facing a problem that caused you to become anxious and fraught with worry. Did it work itself out in the end and does it effect your life anymore? If it doesn’t, then use it as a lesson for future problems – if you survived that particular issue then what makes you think you won’t survive this one and come out the other side perfectly fine?
Action is the key if you want to control your life and relieve stress. When we make small steps in the right direction, our minds are put at ease as it recognises that something is being done. Make progress in whatever way you can and the magnitude of the situation will start to diminish before your eyes.
Relying on others is unpredictable and unstable. Take control of your life by managing things yourself. That doesn’t mean you can’t ask for help along the way, it just means that you should have a strong handle on your own life and be fully responsible for running the show. Do what you need to do, for you, and don’t allow other people to dictate or have power over how your life should be.
It sounds contradictory, but sometimes to take control, you need to let go. You can’t control everything in life, sometimes things happen and there’s nothing you can do about it. In those circumstances, acceptance is the only way forward. Accept what has happened or changed and allow yourself to think of the next step without becoming deeply anxious about it. Dealing with stress isn’t easy, but make it as easy as it can be and don’t overthink things.
“Life is a balance of holding on and letting go.”
