Inspirational Quotes About Life: The Best Literary Characters Life Advice

Some characters may be the product of imagination, but they are so vivid and powerful that they become alive to us. Their words can be of comfort when we need them the most, and teach us knowledge from faraway worlds that can be applied to our lives.

Here is a list of some of my favorite inspirational messages by popular fictional characters; some of them are very powerful and compelling, others convey peace. Each one of them, however, has some knowledge to teach us. Make treasure of their life advice, and apply it for yourself when you need it the most.

“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us” – Gandalf the Grey (Lord of the Rings)

One of the most loved characters from the Lord of the Rings, Gandalf is a being whose backstory is very often not well explored in the popular movies of this franchise. Many see him as a wizard akin to Merlin, but he is much more. His only mission is to bring peace to the world he has travelled to, sent by very powerful beings to fulfill their will and destroy the evil that menaces men. He knows that his time is limited, and that once his duty is fulfilled he must leave Middle Earth forever. He is never saddened by this; even when facing demise, he instills hope in those that surround him.

“Oh yes, the past can hurt. But you can either run from it or learn from it” – Rafiki (The Lion King)

The weird and funny sage that everyone loved. Rafiki hides great wisdom beneath a surface of glee and joyfulness, but without his inspirational messages Simba would have never returned to his land, facing his destiny. From him we must learn that even if something hurts us, we can learn from it and become stronger by coming to terms with it.

“Difference of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open” – Albus Dumbledore (Harry Potter)

Another old, grandfatherly figure that conveys peace. But Dumbledore is much more than that. He is aware that his actions may bring harm to some, but in the grand scheme of things he knows he is fighting for a greater good. He is a bit of a controversial character, but one thing he believes is: in the redeeming qualities of everyone, and that everyone has their good part to play in the story.

“Sometimes the right path is not the easiest one” – Grandmother Willow (Pocahontas)

Ancient and wise, Grandmother Willow represents the will and spirit of nature. Pocahontas consults her when she seeks advice; her doubts are quenched when she talks to her, true (or imagined) embodiment of something old and greater that all of us.

“Anything is possible when you have inner peace” – Master Shifu (Kung Fu Panda)

The most recently created character on this list. Master Chifu may be modern, but his inspirational quotes about life transmit great wisdom. He supports and trains the main character, testing him and making him stronger even when nobody else believes in him.
