What is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, and is the name given to the day that marks the beginning of the Carnival period. While not generally celebrated in America, it does hold importance for many Christian European communities in the country. For the occasion many cities have a Mardi Gras party where people wear masks and march through the streets in costume.

The name Mardi Gras probably comes from the tradition of eating fatty foods before the fasting period of six weeks that will last up until Easter Day. Across the centuries the meaning of this celebration was distorted; nowadays popular practices on Mardi Gras include dancing, sports competitions, wearing masks and overturning social conventions.

Every country celebrated Mardi Gras in their own different way. The most famous ones are the Brazilian carnival and the Carnival of Venice. And what about you? Do you have a Mardi Gras party?

When is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras happens on a different day every year. In 2014, it will be on March 4th.
