According to a new study, mindfulness can be as good as certain pills when it comes to recovering after depression. Learn how meditation can help you stay positive.
Mindful meditation is a practice that teaches you to recognize negative thoughts and access them from afar. Rather than worrying about them, you can understand them and accept them, avoiding being dragged into them once again. A new study published on the medical journal The Lancet (READ THE ARTICLE) has proven the effectiveness of this natural depression remedy.
The trial involved a group of 424 adults that were willing to try either pills or the therapy including medication. The patients were randomly selected to try out one of the different courses. The ones that had tried out mindful meditation gradually came off their medication, and were assigned to eight group sessions of two hours, home practice and follow up sessions over a year. They were trained to the practice of mindful meditation, and had group discussions over it.
The other group followed the pill prescription. In the end, the relapse rate for the two groups were very similar, with 44% in the mindful meditation group and 47% for the one that relied on drugs. Researchers established that meditation was as good of a remedy as the pills, and that it would offer a new options for those that do not want to be on medication for years. It would have less side effects on the body; this study has opened many people’s minds to the idea that depression natural remedies are very effective and could be a viable option for many in the future.
As the research stated: “Depression remains a disabling condition with high prevalence and a large clinical burden. Despite the increased use of drugs, the long-term outcome of mood disorders has not improved in the modern era. Having an alternative non-medication strategy to reduce relapse is an important means to help patients with depression.”
