Emotions are a highly transient being, we are never one particular emotion for very long except in extreme circumstances. Throughout each day our mood goes up and down depending on a variety of factors, some of which we can control and some of which we can’t. It is a difficult thing to do to try and change a mood – especially if you are having a particularly bad day – however there are steps you can take and things you can do for an instant mood boost.
Get More Sleep
Exhaustion and fatigue are not good for your health or mind. Sleep deprivation makes us stressed, sluggish and more susceptible to illness. You are unlikely to fully enjoy your day when you are extremely tired and your work will be affected also. If you are looking to boost your mood start simple and go to bed earlier.
Start Your Day On The Right Foot
How you prepare yourself in the morning can affect how you feel throughout the day. In order to start your day correctly make sure you are well rested from the night before and give yourself plenty of time to get ready for the day ahead. Take five minutes after you wake up to give yourself some ‘you’ time and think about the day ahead and anything you are looking forward to. Music is a natural mood enhancer so if you have time then listen to your favorite artists in the morning to kick-start your day correctly.
Exercise In The Fresh Air
When we are feeling down we tend to shrink away from people, activities and going outdoors. We want to be alone with our problems and hide away from reality. This is is the worst thing we can do for ourselves as exercising is one of the best natural mood enhancers and is proven to increase serotonin levels which make us feel happy. Rather than doing strenuous exercise or locking yourself into a gym, going on a short but brisk walk outside can elevate positive feelings and give you a much needed mood boost and break from the stresses in your life.
Plan Something Nice
If you want to boost your mood, there is no better way to do it than to plan an activity or event to look forward to. You will feel immediately happier when you make the plan, but also you can remind yourself that you have something to look forward to whenever you are feeling low. It doesn’t have to be anything big, maybe just a coffee date with a friend, but seeing something fun in your diary can get you through some tougher times.
Surround Yourself With The Right People
Anyone who has ever spent time in a toxic environment with toxic people knows how bad it is for mental health. Emotions and moods are infectious and if you are around people who bring you down, make you feel bad or are very negative you will start to feel the same way. Find people who lift your mood and think positively and soon you will feel much better for it.
Getting yourself out of a bad mood is not an easy task, but hopefully these tips will help you on your way. Just remember the power of positive thinking and you’ll turn your frown upside down in no time!
