What is Thanksgiving Day, many people may ask. It’s a celebration day with its traditions, like the Thanksgiving dinner with different Thanksgiving recipes, it’s a particular day of the year to thank Gods for the harvest, it can also be considered a commercial celebration nowadays… but let’s start from the beginning.

On the fourth Thursday of November, Americans celebrate Thanksgiving Day each year. On this day many people follow the tradition and many celebrate on their own way. It is also called the ‘Turkey Day’ as Turkey is the traditional meal of choice. Though it is celebrated in other countries too but it is primarily a celebration in the U.S.

What is Thanksgiving Day?

Originally a Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in the ancient times when people prayed and offered gifts to the Gods as a gratification, through which they get good harvest. This is probably the oldest religious customs performed by different cultures and groups in various countries. Thanksgiving festival or ceremony was celebrated at the end when their harvest gave profit to them. It was first celebrated in the United States probably in 1621. Even today U.S celebrates this day with a holiday; people spend quality time with their family by enjoying traditions, drinks, dishes and other customs.

This Harvest Festival is celebrated under different names in different countries. Canada celebrates this on the second Monday of October. India also celebrates various harvest related festivals that have different names in different regions: some of them are Lohri, Baisakhi, Onam, Pongal, etc.. Netherlands, China, Korea, Malaysia, U.K, Australia and some Asian and African countries also celebrate this day but with different names and dates, too. However, there is a folklore attached to each of this festival. But the underlying theme of celebration that is peace, feeling, gratitude and harmony, are the same all over the world.

Thanksgiving Day Recipes

The best about Thanksgiving Day is spending time with family. Far from their family many people travel long distances to meet their relatives. However, this is the day in which people meet their loved ones. Foods are the most important part of a Thanksgiving Day. Some of the traditional and most famous foods of this occasion are turkey, cornbread and sweet potatoes, stuffing gravy, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes. At the end of the meal serving pie as a dessert is the most popular tradition. Mostly, pies are in flavors of pecan, apple, pumpkin and sweet potato.

For vegetarian there is an alternative to turkey, which is a vegetarian turkey made of tofu. With this, people prefer to eat salads, vegetable dishes, squash and some other fruits. However, the most famous food for Thanksgiving dinner is a Thanksgiving turkey.

Another popular Thanksgiving dinner in some culture is Turducken, it is a boneless chicken, stuffed in a boneless duck and then stuffed to boneless turkey. It is very popular in Southern part of the United States. For a Thanksgiving dinner, stuffing is very important, whether a stuffed spicy sausage with onion or cornbread stuffing with cranberry and apple; all of them create a popular side dish.

Many people don’t have enough money to celebrate this day. That’s way many Americans spend their Thanksgiving Day as a day to charity and to serve food such as canned foods and shelters to others.
