The winter holidays are coming up, and we are all looking forwards to eating a bit more than usual with our families and friends. In preparation for all the excessive (but oh so wonderful) eating we are probably going to undergo within the next few days, I wanted to share with you a routine of the best detox yoga poses. Follow these 5 kundalini yoga poses to get back into shape after the holidays! You can do these exercises right before eating in order to prepare your body for digestion, or about 2 hours after. WARNING: do not do these detox yoga poses right after eating, as they should never be carried out with a full stomach.
Revolved Chair Pose (Parivrtta Utkatasana)
One of the best yoga poses for beginners, the Revolved Chair Pose is extremely simple to carry out but has a lot of benefits. Just start with your feet together. Inhale and raise your arms above your head, perpendicular to the floor. Exhale while you bend your knees, trying to bring your thighs parallel to the floor. This is the Chair Pose.
Starting from this position, bring your hands together at your chest while inhaling. Exhale, and turn your torso. This pose is said to improve your digestion and strengthen your stomach.
Wide-Legged Forward Bend (Prasarita Padottanasana)
One of the best detox yoga poses, the Wide-Legged Forward Bend encourages blood circulation and squeezes the belly, moving things along for digestion. Here is how to do it:
Stand with your feet apart, heels slightly turned towards the outside. Put your hands behind you, pressing their heels together in a double fist.
Take in a deep breath, slowly fold your waist forward, lowering your hands as you move along. Hold this pose, and breathe deeply for five times. Slowly rise again
From Downward Facing Dog to Three-Legged Down Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana)
This pose is not only said to detox your body, but also your mind. It once again encourages blood circulation, and helps you release stress, fear and sadness. Assume the Downward Facing Dog position. Keep your shoulders parallel to the ground, and raise your left leg up in the air. Hold it there for five deep breaths, lower it slowly and repeat the movement for the other leg.
Seated Heart Opener (Vajrasana Variations)
One of the best Kundalini yoga poses to improve your respiration, the Seated Heart Opener encourages your body to eliminate carbon dioxide and other wastes. This detox yoga pose is extremely simple: begin seated on your shins, interlace your hands behind you and then move them towards the floor. Press the palms to the floor, and open your chest and shoulders while you do so. After five deep breaths, release your hands.
Locust Yoga Pose (Salabhasana)
This pose puts pressure on your abdomen and encourages digestion. Lie on your belly with your legs together. Place your arms on your sides with your palms facing upwards. While inhaling, lift your legs and head off the floor; use your hands as support.
I hope you found these detox yoga poses useful and interesting. Use them if you ever need to digest after eating too much during the holidays! If you have problems digesting on a daily basis, try and integrate them in your normal yoga routine.
