How To Break Bad Habits

How To Break Bad Habits

Do you think that breaking bad habits (such as twisting your hair or biting your nails) is an impossible feat? Here are some simple ways in which you can solve your problems!

It may be hard to admit, but you have a habit which some people would describe as bad. Seeing you bite your nails is not a nice sight, and it certainly is not healthy. Seeing you twist your hair does not make you cuter. Smoking, is, in fact, not only unhealthy for you but also for the ones surrounding you! So why not break these bad habits and replace them with something else? Odds are that you have already tried, but you miserably failed. It probably was not your fault; the methods you used were ineffective, and you lacked confidence in them. Here are some methods that experts suggest you should try. Remember: believing in their efficacy is the first step towards making them work!

Make it Conscious

The first step towards breaking bad habits is recognizing their existence. Try noticing under which circumstances you acts in certain (strange) ways. Does stress or feeling uncomfortable have an effect on you? Draw an outline in order to start figuring out how to stop.

Write It Down

Start writing down what you do in order to make your bad habits more and more conscious. Note down what triggers them, and the pros and cons of this behavior. Ask people that surround to stop you once you engage in them, and ask them if they find it strange that you act that way.

Switch Them

Once you realize you have a bad habit and that you want to break it, the next step is finding a replacement for it. Find something with which to switch it, maybe a healthy habit! If you are a nail biter, try eating gum. If you clear your throat too much, try having a bottle of water always at the ready. If you crack your knuckles when coping with stress, try stoking your sleeves of doodling instead.

Finally, meditation is a great way to vent and is great with breaking bad habits. Mindfulness can help you focus onto something else, and distract you once the trigger of a bad habit happens. Here is some relaxing music you can listen while you meditate.

I hope you found these tips on how to break bad habits useful. Remember: for them to work it you must firstly believe in their effectiveness, and never stop thinking that you should get rid of them!
Good luck!
